Triple and Quadruple IPAs live in the far end of the craft beer spectrum — bold, intense, and brewed for drinkers who think a regular IPA is just the beginning.
A Triple IPA (sometimes called a TIP A) is essentially an amplified version of a Double IPA. Brewers push hop quantities, alcohol content, and body to extremes. The result is a beer that typically features:
Very high alcohol content (often 10–12% ABV or more)
Massive hop aroma and flavor
Strong bitterness balanced by noticeable sweetness
Full, almost chewy mouthfeel
Despite the name, a Triple IPA isn’t made by literally tripling ingredients. Instead, it represents a stylistic leap: more hops, more malt backbone, more intensity. Expect explosive notes of citrus, tropical fruit, pine, resin, and sometimes a warming alcoholic finish.
A Quadruple IPA goes even further, though it’s a rarer and less formally defined style. These beers often exceed 12% ABV and are brewed as experimental, boundary-pushing creations. Compared to Triple IPAs, Quadruple IPAs tend to be:
Even stronger and richer
Less sharply bitter, sometimes sweeter for balance
Extremely aromatic and complex
Designed for slow sipping rather than casual drinking
In practice, Quadruple (or higher) IPAs are less about strict rules and more about brewer creativity. They showcase how far hop-forward brewing can go before the beer becomes something closer to a hybrid between an IPA, barleywine, or strong ale.
For beer enthusiasts, these high-strength IPAs are about experience. They’re not everyday session beers; they’re conversation pieces — the kind of bottles shared among friends, tasted slowly, and remembered. If standard IPAs celebrate hops, Triple and Quadruple IPAs celebrate excess, craftsmanship, and the adventurous side of craft beer.
